Due to the nature and location of Sweden, the five R’s of waste management are integrated into the concepts of sustainability in Swedish culture. The five pillars of waste management consist of refuse, reuse, repurpose, reduce, and recycle. It is a cultural norm to purchase or reuse bags in Sweden to reduce import costs. The grocery bags are also made of strong paper bags with handles to reduce the waste of plastic. I also noticed the recycling facilities are close to the grocery stores so oftentimes the grocery bags would be repurposed to transfer recyclable waste like plastic bottles. After spending time in Sweden, I found myself refusing to use excessive bags while shopping. At some point in time, I consistently had a backpack on to hold whatever goods I would need throughout the day.
