The Swedish language is very complex for American speakers. However, I learned that in Sweden it is mandatory to learn English during the younger stages of education. Although English is mandatory for Swedes to learn at a young age, they prefer to speak in their native tongue. I also really admired the excitement of the Swedish people to speak in English.
There are a set of words that are courteous to learn in Swedish:
God morgon ( good-more-gon): means good morning
Tack så mycket ( taok-saw-miket): means how you say thank you very much
Tack tack: means thank you thank you
Hej Hej (hey hey): is the equivalent of hey
These are not the only important words in Swedish to learn, however after being there for a while, starting conversations with these words led the natives to believe I was from there. I also learned in my time there that the Swedish language, The Polish (Poland) language, and the Finnish (Finland) language are all very similar. The Swedish language is typically learned by refugees to help them feel one with the Culture. Being there for a short time I was able to learn some of the language simply by wanting certain spices and needing food.
